frequently asked questions

  • What is TUBUP?
TUBUP is a wacky workshop, where you get to make your very own Ukulele, using a spread tub, some bits of wood and some fishing line. Once you’ve decorated it, you’ll learn some songs to play with The Utterly Butterly Band! It;s a right laugh!
  • Who came up with the design?
Nick Pemmy is an author, musician, instrument luthier, and many more things (www.nickpenny.com) developed the design, and whilst he has now retired from the project, Nick produced around 25,000 TUB-Uke kits in his workshop, as was a member of the TUBUP delivery team. . The original prototype was made using a Bertoli tub, but the design has largely remained the same, with just a few tweaks. Since Nick’s retirement from TUBUPThe Uke kits now are made by a local “Men In Sheds” group
  • Where do we get the TUBS from?
The TUBS come straight from the makers of Utterly Butterly, a company called Saputo https://uk.saputo.com/ , formerly owned by Dairy Crest. Often the tubs they provide are old stock, where for example there is a special offer price printed on the tub, which has now expired, or a change in tub design has occurred. We’ve made TUB-Ukes from limited edition prototype/market testing products too. Back in 2009, when the project began, Steve randomly called the Utterly Butterly factory, based in Kirkby, Liverpool to ask if they could provide some tubs to make ukuleles, and they have provided tubs ever since!
