The Utterly Butterly Ukulele Project (TUBUP)

Music and junk instrument making workshops for corporate businesses

Prince Charles Ukulele

The Utterly Butterly Ukulele Project (TUBUP) was founded in 2009 by Steve Nutter (Nutter), Nick Penny (Prof) and Simon Ferraby (Toff), as part of a family learning arts festival activity in Corby, Northamptonshire. Over a period of 3 months, 1150 people made TUB-Ukuleles. There was a massed gathering of TUB-Uke players, who performed in the town centre!

We have delivered the project in schools, at community events and for corporate businesses all over the UK, and we’ve found that the project seems to have a universal appeal to all age groups. Some of the highlights of the project include: BBC Children in need Wales – 600 TUB-Ukes in a day, Guest speakers at the Music Learning Live Education Conference (Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama) and as you can see below, even esteemed members of The Royal Family have not escaped the TUB-Uke!

We’ll come into your workplace or venue with everything you need to make your own Ukulele.

The ukuleles are made using a spread tub, a piece of wood and have fishing line strings. You’ll be amazed how well they sound and play!

Once you’ve made your TUB-Uke, we’ll show how to play.

To your amusement and amazement, you’ll find yourself playing your own TUB-Uke with the Utterly Butterly Band in a massed ukulele jam session.

Your team will be amazed and amused at how well the TUB-Uke plays after receiving some expert tuition and taking part in a grand mass performance with The Utterly Butterly Band.

Approx duration: 1.5 – 3 hours
Number of participants: up to 60 in one session

Feedback from our workshops

Dragon School, Oxford

“It just takes an empty butter tub, some fishing line and a few pieces of wood to make an authentic-sounding ukulele, as Year 4 pupils found out on Thursday 7th November. In a workshop led by three Hawaiian-shirted helpers from the Utterly Butterly Ukulele project – ‘Prof’, ‘Toff’ and ‘Nutter’, the children made their own instruments from entirely recycled materials, tuned them and customised them, before spending some time learning how to play some useful chords. By the afternoon, they were ready to perform live in front of an audience in the main school hall.
Familiar songs such as ‘In the Jungle’ were played alongside specially-composed numbers including ‘The Utterly Butterly Ukulele Song’ and ‘Blow Your Bubble,’ which had the ukulele-players singing and strumming away happily while the audience clapped them along. Another performance of the hand-made ukuleles can be expected at the End of Term concert.”

“What a blast. You were a sensation and Blaby is still ringing to the sound of Ukuleles. One little girl insisted on taking hers back to playgroup on Monday, for show and tell. Mum said it hadn’t left her sight since making it on Saturday morning. A duet was heard in Waitrose, which confused the shoppers somewhat. Many thanks, look forward to working with you again”
